Qualitative variables | Statistics

Qualitative variables are variables that assume non-numeric values. Examples of qualitative variables can be gender, race, eye color and model of car.

When we study a qualitative population, we collect data on qualitative variables. When studying qualitative variables, we are most often interested in the number or proportion (percentage) for each category.

Qualitative variables are often presented in graphs. Qualitative variables are also called attributes.
